LESLIE ROY HECK
ARTIST STATEMENT
My preferred medium is Encaustic, dating back to the Greco-Roman period, meaning “to burn in.” Through this wax layering technique, I have blended my past with my present. I began my career in the arts in 1976 as a dancer with the New York City Ballet under the leadership of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and retired as a soloist in 1989.
My love of dance has heavily influenced my artistic pursuits and my study of both classical and neoclassical ballet has contributed to my understanding of pattern, motion, line, contrast, shape, proportion, rhythm and energy. Many of the costumes I wore onstage were designed by Barbara Karinska, and greatly shaped my aesthetic. The patterns, colors and textures I use in my art are influenced by the many years of wearing her masterpieces. My work mimics some of the ethereal qualities of dance and this medium allows my past to intertwine with my present experience.
